広辞苑によると「スマート」の意は、
�� からだつきや物の形が細くすらりとして格好がよいさま。「スマートな車体」。
�� 身なりや動作などが洗練されて粋なさま。颯爽。「スマートな態度」。

英語でもイギリス英語では上記の意味で使われます。
You look very smart in that suit.
They were wearing their smartest clothes.
a smart car
この意味では、アメリカでは「well dressed」「stylish」「fashionable」「good-looking」等が使われます。

しかしアメリカ英語では「smart」は主に「intelligent」の意で使われます。
She’s smarter that her brother.
That was a smart career move.
OK, I admit it was not the smartest thing I ever did. (= it was a stupid thing to do.)
The smart money is on Liam Neeson for best actor (=smart people are betting on him).
文脈によっては「ズル賢い」の意にもなりますので使い方は要注意です。

「smart」には「厳しい、激しい、（傷などが）ひりひりする、（打撃などが）強い」の意もあります（ジーニアス英和大辞典）。これは「smart」の語源がこの意であったからです。私の英英では「(of a movement) quick and usually done with force.」と説明しています。

We set off at a smart pace.

更に「精密で高感度な、センサーに敏感に反応する」という意味もあります。
a smart chip（マイクロチップ内蔵のクレジットカード）
